about

"A PROFOUND WORK OF ART.”
— Downbeat Magazine,

"O’LEARY ILLUMINATES HIS PATH AND PERSPECTIVES WITH REMARKABLE CLARITY.”
— Jazz Times,

The stellar collaborations with pianist and producer and 9 time GRAMMY Award winner Shaun Martin, of Snarky Puppy, and jazz legend and NEA Jazz Master Dick Hyman celebrate friendship and human connection.

With a rich and complex cultural background, John C. O’Leary III—the son of an American father and a Mexican mother—writes music that harbors an idiosyncratic and poetic dichotomy. There’s a deep sense of longing and belonging that invites soul into his music.

The Sundering opens listeners up to all that makes humans vulnerable. We can easily identify with these songs and that makes us want to go back and listen to them over again. The album has a cinematic quality to it; it offers a glimpse into the main character’s life scenes that evoke moments full of emotion: memories of childhood, snapshots of joy, of nostalgia, separation, friendship, existential ponderings, and at times confusion and doubt.

Listening to John’s compositions and arrangements feels like you are getting to know him as a person. At times introspective and contemplative, and other times outgoing and virtuosic, John’s personable performance throughout the album displays the wide range of his musical palette. As an outstanding composer and interpreter, the pace of the album entices you to travel with him through his quest of solving the conundrums of a split identity between two countries, two seemingly very different cultures, and the recollection of his own memories, slowly piecing them together through each note.
